Once again we look to Christmas on the Island as a joyful time for families and friends. One of the premier holiday events is the La Posada Lighted Boat Parades that thrill Islanders while collecting thousands of toys for the Toys for Tots.

The year the La Posada Foundation promises to provide another series of La Posada events that will provide lasting memories of what Christmas is like on our Island. LA POSADA HISTORY

Several years ago the Padre Island Yacht Club assumed the sponsorship of the La Posada Lighted Boat Parade from the forefather, thus continuing a festive annual Island Christmas tradition. Parade boats have always been well-lighted and decorated, boasting Christmas, Patriotic, and seasonal themes.

Boats have traveled through pre-determined parade routes in the canals of the Laguna Madre for 40 years, treating Islanders to lighted boat parades on both Friday and Saturday evenings. They boats are judged in several categories and the 1st place winners have won trophies and more recently fine, hand-made ceramic vases from a local potter. Through the years the judging has been held at different locations, however, currently, judges, secretly selected in advance, review the boats as they begin the parades.

During the parades volunteers with United States Marines in collector boats travel around the canals of the Island picking up toys that are donated to the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots campaign the Sunday following the parades. The toys are loaded on to trucks where they are taken eventually to their final destinations – homes of less fortunate children in the Coastal Bend.

The La Posada Foundation and the La Posada Committee view the parades and the other La Posada events as being ‘All about the kids” because all of the generous toy and monetary donations are given to children. Islanders have felt proud and honored to be a part of such profound Christmas spirit and generosity.

Beginning in 2011 the Padre Island Yacht Club in partnership with a fantastic and generous restaurant on the Island, Scuttlebutt’s, began hosting a La Posada Kick-off Party, now the Pre-Party of the Las Posada Lighted Boat Parades. The Pre-Party has enhanced the La Posada tradition by creating a party atmosphere where locals can bring toys for Toys for Tots, eat, participate in live and silent auctions, and enjoy Christmas spirit.

Clearly, the generosity of Islanders (both individuals and businesses) is what makes the La Posada events successful and meaningful because in addition to locals enjoying exciting and memorable holiday season events and parties, children who might not ordinarily receive Christmas gifts receive presents from the United States Marines.

The La Posada Foundation invites all locals, their families, and their friends to participate in the La Posada events and to give generously again this year.
